Check the axial force, tensile and torsional strength of the cross-sectional area of the CNC lathe's horizontal ball screw, and calculate the bending stress caused by installation errors; the breakage of the horizontal ball screw is not related to design, use, installation accuracy and equipment wear. Regardless of whether the horizontal ball screw exceeds its service life, its fracture is caused by low-stress brittle fracture caused by initial cracks on the surface of the screw and internal defects in the material.
The service life of the CNC machine tool ball screw is set to 1 ~ 15000h. Calculated at 8 hours per day and 251 working days per year, it can run for about 5~7.5 years. However, many CNC lathes' horizontal ball screws do not reach this running time and will break. The service life of the horizontal ball screw of some economical CNC lathes is less than one year.

(1) Lubrication of ball screw
Poor lubrication of the ball screw can simultaneously cause errors in various feeding movements of the CNC machine tool. Therefore, lubrication is the main content of daily maintenance of the ball screw. The use of lubricants can improve the wear resistance and transmission efficiency of the ball screw. Lubricants can be divided into lubricating oil and lubricating grease.
Lubricating oil is generally a total loss system oil, and lithium-based grease can be used as lubricating grease. Usually, grease is added to the screw thread raceway and the shell space of the mounting nut, while lubricating oil is injected into the space of the nut through the oil holes in the shell. The grease on the ball screw should be replaced every six months, the old grease on the screw should be cleaned and new grease applied, and the ball screw lubricated with lubricating oil can be oiled once before each machine operation.
(2) Regular inspection of screw bearings
Regularly check whether the connection between the screw bracket and the bed is loose, whether the connector is damaged, and the working and lubrication status of the screw bracket bearing.
(3) Protection of ball screw
Like other rolling friction transmission devices, the ball screw should avoid the entry of hard dust or debris, so protective devices are equipped. If the ball screw is exposed on the machine tool, a closed protective cover should be used, such as a spiral spring steel strip sleeve, telescopic sleeve and folding sleeve. During installation, one end of the protective cover is connected to the side of the ball nut, and the other end is fixed to the support of the ball screw. If the ball screw is in a hidden position, it can be protected by a sealing ring, which is installed at both ends of the nut.
THK slide manufacturer: The contact elastic sealing ring is made of oil-resistant rubber or nylon, and its inner hole is made into a shape matching the screw thread raceway; the contact sealing ring has a good dust-proof effect, but due to the contact pressure, the frictional torque is slightly increased. The non-contact sealing ring, also known as the labyrinth sealing ring, is made of hard plastic, and its inner hole is relatively shaped to the screw thread raceway, with a small gap, which can avoid friction torque, but the dust-proof effect is poor. Avoid collision with the protective device during operation, and replace it in time if it is damaged.
