A small guide to selecting linear guide slides

Linear guide sliders are key components in linear guide systems. They slide along linear guides, supporting and guiding moving parts in a given direction for reciprocating linear motion. These sliding friction guides feature high precision, high load capacity, and good stability, making them widely used in numerous fields, including CNC machine tools, machining centers, electronics, and automated machinery. Common slider brands include THK, HIWIN, and Kate, among others. Whether domestic or imported, their functions are similar.

The image above shows three types of sliders: flange type, standard square type, and extended square type. Square linear guide sliders are taller and narrower, while flange-type sliders are shorter but wider. Extended sliders primarily differ in length. Square guides consist of a steel frame and internal sliders, offering high precision, high rigidity, wear resistance, and long service life, suitable for high-load, high-speed, and high-precision equipment. Flange-type guides have a simpler structure, comprising a one-piece steel track and slider. Their precision is slightly lower than square guides, but they are relatively cheaper and more versatile. Extended sliders, due to their increased length, have a larger contact area with the guide, distributing load pressure more evenly and offering greater load-bearing capacity.

Different sliders have different installation methods. Square sliders have threaded blind holes, allowing only top-side installation. Flange-type sliders have through-threaded holes, enabling installation from both top and bottom.
In summary, square, flange, and extended linear guide sliders each have their own characteristics and applications. Selection should be based on specific application needs and equipment requirements.
